Who knew that narwhals were so darn cute? First, we loved unicorns, next, we loved mermaids…now it is narwhals. They are basically unicorn mermaids so I totally get it. Make these adorable narwhal cupcakes for your next party. Your guests will love them!
Before you bake your cupcakes, you will need to make a few things before you get started on your Narwhal cupcakes.
Fondant Narwhal Tails
First, you need to make a tail for you narwhal out of fondant.
You’ll need:
1 package of blue fondant
1 Whale Tail cookie cutter or your mad freehand drawing skills and an edible marker
1/2 cup powdered sugar
cutting board
fondant rolling pin (makes getting an even sheet easier) or a regular rolling pin
Exacto knife
Directions
Sprinkle powdered sugar onto cutting board and roll fondant into 1/4 inch thickness
Cut out enough whale tale shapes for your cupcakes (one each).
Leave the tails on the cutting board and allow to dry out overnight.
Pretty Blue Narwhal Cupcake Bases
Ingredients
1 box of french vanilla cake mix cake mix
3 large eggs at room temp
1/2 cup of softened unsalted sweet cream butter
1 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Sky Blue gel food colouring
white cupcake liners
cupcake pan
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Line muffin pan with the white cupcake liners.
In a medium bowl, add the cake mix, butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined
Mix a few drops of the blue food colouring into the cake batter.
Fill the cupcake liners 3/4 way full.
Bake for about 18-20 minutes.
Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
Narwhal Cupcake Frosting
Ingredients
2 cups unsalted sweet cream butter, softened
5 cups powder sugar
2 tsp vanilla
6-10 Tbsp heavy whipping cream
Sky blue, soft pink and black gel food colouring
1 medium ice cream scooper
1 disposable piping bag with a medium round tip
2 disposable piping bags with #3 piping tips
1 package of unicorn horn royal icing transfers or edible unicorn horn cupcake toppers or make your own
3 small mixing bowls
Directions
Using a stand mixer, combine all frosting ingredients and mix on medium speed until you see stiffed peaks in your frosting.
Once the frosting is made, split it into 3 bowls
Scoop about 1 cup of the frosting into one bowl and add in black gel food colouring
Scoop about 1/2 cup of the frosting into the second bowl and add in a few drops of pink food colouring
Mix in a few drops of the sky blue gel food colouring into the remaining frosting
Scoop about 2 cups of blue frosting into the piping back with the medium round tip
Scoop the black frosting into one of the piping bags with the #3 tip.
Scoop the pink frosting into the other piping bag with the #3 tip.
Assembling your Narwhal Cupcakes
Using the ice cream scooper, scoop a smooth dome of blue frosting onto each cupcake.
Place a Unicorn horn cupcake topper into the top center of the frosting
Using the black frosting piping bag, Draw a smile on the front of the frosting dome (use picture as a guide).
Using the pink frosting, pipe two dots for the cheeks on each side of the smile.
Using the medium round tip, pipe the whale’s flippers by piping a small dollop of blue frosting on both sides
Stick one fondant whale tail into the top back of the frosting dome on each cupcake.
