In the last few weeks, I’ve had a lot of conversations about what are the best small kitchen appliances. I’m getting ready for our epic US RV trip and I’m trying to determine what I should take with me. I am more constrained than most people…I’m going to be living in 113 square feet…but who wants to buy something that sucks? No one!
I have made a mental list of MY favourite kitchen appliances but I don’t know everything so I took to FB to ask my trusty readers. This list incluces my favourites as well as suggestions from the FB page. I think some of them sound ingenious (looking at you tortilla press that cooks them too!). Have one that is not on the list? Share in the comments!

My votes for best small kitchen appliances:
Instant Pot – I will admit that I am still learning to use my Instant Pot but I still love it. So far my favourite recipes are beef stew, pulled and crack chicken. So good and ready in no time (and you set it and forget it). Next I want to try ribs. Yum!
Crock Pot – While I love my Instant Pot, I still love my Crock Pot too. Plus I have heard that the slow cooker function on the Instant Pot (IP) isn’t that great. I use the Instant Pot when I have an hour or so right before dinner to cook something. I use my Crock Pot when I want to set dinner to cook before I leave in the morning and have it ready to eat when I get home. Plus I have lots of great Crock Pot recipes.
Keurig – I know that many have a love/hate relationship with single serve coffee makers BUT normally I am the only one having coffee so brewing a big pot for one cup is not ideal. Plus there are lots of companies who make the pods without the plastic cup nonsense now so I buy those. I just wish the water reservoir was bigger because you have to fill it OFTEN.
Breville Smart Toaster – For the longest time, I thought that toasters were all the same. You put bread in, you push down the lever and out pops burned toast. Oh wait, that is just at my house wher my husband LIKES burned toast so it is always set to “blacken”. Then we got this toaster. Dewey lovingly calls it the robot toaster and it is his favourite appliance of all time. You see, he takes his toast REALLY seriously and this toaster gives you consistent, even toasting every time and it lets you look at it to make sure (without canceling the toast cycle). Yep, if Dewey had to choose between me and the toaster, I’m not sure who would win.
Margaritaville Margarita machine – Is a margarita maker a kitchen appliance? I wasn’t going to include it but it may be Dewey’s second favorite kitchen appliance after the toaster. Any appliance that my husband loves has to be pretty special. It’s noisy but it makes a heck of a margarita, especially if you use Dewey’s margarita recipe. If you buy one and make margaritas, you will be very popular. You may even find that you have new friends you’ve never even met. They just appear. True story.
Toaster Oven – The one appliance I think I will buy before leaving on our road trip. My trailer doesn’t have an oven and I think I will want to have the ability to bake a few things while we are away. This particular model has been rated “best bang for your buck” on the reviews I’ve read. Works for me!
Merry About Town Readers’ Best Small Kitchen Appliances:
All of the appliances below were suggested by readers. A few of them I own but most I do not…..but I think I see some of them in my future.
Electric Tortilla Maker – I have heard of tortilla presses but when someone suggested that there were ELECTRIC ones that press and cook homemadae tortillas, I was amazed. Now I want one!
Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer – For anyone that does a lot of baking, a KitchenAid is awesome. I love mine even though I don’t use it a ton. However, when Christmas rolls around, I am glad to have it to make dozens of cookies and cinnamon rolls.
Cuisinart Food Processor – So many people swear by their food processors. I have one that I always forget about. I still need to learn how to make pie crust in it.
Actifry – Air fryers are all the rage and I WANT ONE. Every since my friend Kyla wrote about it on her blog. Maybe I will just go steal hers. I kid….mostly. I think I would use it to make chicken wings, french fries and potato chips. Maybe it is a good thing that I don’t have one.
Ninja 3-in-1 – I will admit that I have never actually heard of this one. The write up says it can slow cook, steam, roast, bake, brown, saute, simmer, and sear. Huh. Sounds pretty cool and more than one person reccomended it. Do you have one? I’d love to hear about it.
Vitamix – I really should have put the Vitamix in my list. I love ours. It stays out on the counter all the time because we use it so often. I am sad to leave it behind in September but it is just too big. Maybe I’ll spring for a smaller blender to take with us.
Immersion blender – The best little appliance you never knew you needed. Putting hot food in a regular blender can leave you cleaning exploded food off your ceiling. Instead, just blend it with an immersion blender without ever taking it out of the pot. The only thing it won’t do? Blend a milkshake in a glass….because almost all of them aren’t wide enough. Here’s how I know.
Anova Sous Vide – I know how to say sous vide. That is about it. However, I have heard that this little gadget will help you make steaks like you wouldn’t believe.
Ice Cream Maker – I have fond memories of making homemade ice cream as a kid. My cousin and I would take turns sitting on top of the crank ice cream maker while the other turned the crank. These don’t seem quite as fun but you get a much more consistent result. Had this baby been in my cabinet this week, I would have made strawberry ice cream. Alas, it was not.
Rice Cooker – I never thought I would buy a rice cooker. When Dewey said we should, I was skeptical at best. Fast forward a few years and now I won’t cook rice without one. You dump the rice and water in, push the button and BOOM. Rice. I know it sounds simple but if you’ve boiled rice over on your stove, you know it is not that easy.
Electric Hard Boiled Egg Cooker – I had no idea this even existed. Pop your eggs in, press a button and out come hard boiled eggs. Cool!
