Planning your next kids birthday party in Calgary? Whether you are having your birthday at one of the great birthday party venues in Calgary or hosting your party at home, you will need a delicious birthday cake. Here are some great bakeries to check out for your birthday cake in Calgary.
I’ve included bakeries that I have used, have been recommended to us by readers and found online. I will not include bakeries that have terrible reviews online (if I see them) but I cannot guarantee the results with a specific bakery. Please do your own due diligence with each bakery for best results. All cake photos are used with permission of the person who bought the cake or the owner of the bakery.
This list is here to help you start your search and find your cake easily. Today it is definitely not an exhaustive list. If you have a bakery you would like me to add because you love them, please email them to me at email@example.com or use the contact form here on the website.
Calgary Birthday Cakes and Cupcakes
Amandine Bakery – Amandine has been a Calgary institution for 35 years. They specialize in European specialties but also make a wide range of specialty cakes as well as shaped birthday cakes. Prices start at $20 for a standard 7″ round. Amandine can also make gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, lactose-free and reduced sugar cakes.
Avenue Cakery and Bake Shoppe – Avenue is actually located in Airdrie or Cochrane but many people make the drive for their cakes. Since Avenue is super popular, know that their regular cakes book 1-3 weeks in advance and their custom cakes book 6-12 weeks in advance. Their cake options are as varied as your budget and time frame. Check out their social media channels to see their latest masterpieces.
Betty Bakes – Cakes from Betty Bakes range from $35 – $110. Don’t you love her Scooby Doo cake above?
Black Dog Bakery – Black Dog offers cupcake, cookie or cake decorating classes that come to you for a party favour/dessert for your party starting at $200 for 8 guests. They also offer custom cakes for your party.
Cake Bake Shoppe – Custom cakes start at $100 with 3-D cakes starting at $250. Custom cakes are their specialty and the sky is the limit. Cakes must be completely confirmed a minimum of 2 weeks prior so booking well ahead of your event is crucial.
Cakes by Amanda – Amanda makes custom cakes for every occasion. Contact her via her FB page for information on pricing, etc.
Cakepunk – Lots of custom cake options and examples to choose from. I think my favourite is Taco Cat. Custom cakes start at $80. Send in online form for quote.
Cakeworks – Cakeworks probably wins for the most varied and extensive selection of decorated cakes. You can browse their gallery of cake ideas. Prices are listed by size within the gallery. You can order online, by phone, email or in store. Order early especially for shaped cakes. We got Evan’s first birthday cake from Cakeworks (above).
Classy Cakes and Cookies – Classy Cakes and Cookies makes epic custom cakes. Check out their social media feeds for ideas. They also host cake decorating classes for adults and kids as well.
Cookie Mama – Cookie Mama brings together a regular bakery with delicious allergen-free product lines that include dairy free, gluten free and vegan choices (though not nut free since their bakery does use nuts). You can order online with a minimum of 3-day lead time. This is a favourite among many of my vegan and dairy free friends. Regular cakes are $50 and up while Allergy & Diet Specific cakes are $60 and up.
Costco – If you are having a big party, Costco cakes are hands down your best-priced option. Call your local Costco to order a specific cake or if you are flexible, just swing by and pick up what they have in stock.
Crave Cupcakes – Calgary’s favourite cupcakes are perfect for a birthday party. An original dozen cupcakes are $42 or a dozen minis for $21. They also make cakes baked to order starting at $50. There are 4 locations in Calgary for your convenience. Place an order by calling the closest location to you. It’s always best to pre-order.
Decadent Brulee – Comes highly recommended by my neighbour. Reviews on FB rave about their carrot cake, lemon cake, coconut cake and peanut butter cup. Everything is made in house with premium ingredients.
Glamorgan Bakery – One of my favourite bakeries (hellooooo….cheese buns!), Glamorgan makes delicious cakes though they do not offer an extensive variety of shaped cakes. You can see Glamorgan’s cake pricing and request a quote online. Glamorgan also makes smash cakes (above) that are the perfect size (and price) for a baby to destroy.
Made by Marcus – Love ice cream cakes but looking for something a bit more upmarket than DQ? Check out Made by Marcus. Ice cream cakes are $30 and you get to choose from Lemon Curd Blueberry, Matcha Vanilla, Rocky Road, Cookies & Cream or Whiskey Hazelnut. Add a message for free.
Mi’Amore Delicacies – Check out her cakes on her FB page. I think the honey cake looks especially delish.
Pretty Sweet – Standard 6 inch cakes serving 8-10 people start at $45. Flavours include vanilla bean, cinnamon bun, peanut butter & jelly, and more.
Sweet Relief – Sweet Relief offers cakes, custom cakes, custom cookies and more. Check out their link to see their cake options. Their standard cakes (which aren’t really all that standard…pretty!) start at $45. Check out their peanut butter buttercream with Carmel Banana filling between layers of espresso chocolate cake above. Thanks, Mr. Fabulous for letting us share your birthday cake!
Swirl Custom Cakes – Swirl is a custom cake bakery by appointment only. They offer gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan cakes as well as macaroon towers.
Twisted Sisters Cake Co – Fun and creative fondant cakes, hand decorated by two Twisted Sisters. Check out their FB page to see examples of their work.
Vegan Doe – Vegan cakes that are delicious, beautiful and vegan. Classic cake flavours start at $45 for a 6-inch cake with specialty flavours like blueberry lemonade or chocolate salted caramel starting at $50.
Whippt Desserts – Whippt offers their three-layer signature cakes as well as custom cakes. Signature cakes start at $55 for a 6-inch round that serve 6-10 people.
Wolf Bay Cafe – Wolf Bay is not open to the public so none of their cakes are “in stock”. Each cake is made specifically for your special event. They have cheesecakes, round cakes and slabs. They can also make custom, stacked and sculpted cakes. Make sure to check out their cake gallery as they have made some really cool custom cakes (one is even a functional beer keg and check out the cool Star Wars cake above!)
