My health and exercise routine has taken a back seat for the last six months. I wish I could give you a solid excuse for that but then I would be lying. It just hasn’t been a focus. The one thing that I have done pretty consistently, though, is to add green smoothies to my diet. You see, no matter how hard I try, I just don’t seem to get enough servings of vegetables on to my plate. Green smoothies are my favorite way to get all that green leafy goodness in to my body with as little effort as possible. Wait….before you starting thinking “ICK…green smoothies….gross!” let me assure you that they are so delicious that even Evan slurps them down with joy.
One thing I’ve determined in all my smoothie testing, though, is that you MUST add protein in to the mix or you are hungry again in no time flat. My favorite way to get that protein staying power? Greek yogurt! Yep, a healthy sized spoon full of Greek yogurt brings it all together without making your smoothie overly dairy heavy and it will keep you full right up until lunch time.
Evan’s Favorite Green Smoothie
3 cups organic baby spinach
1/2 of a large frozen banana
~1/2 cup frozen blueberries
heaping serving spoon of Greek Yogurt
~1/2 cup juice (we like mango or orange)
water as needed for blendability
Optional – 1 Tbsp flax seeds
Add ingredients in you blender. Make sure to put the spinach in first or it doesn’t blend very well. Serve and enjoy. This makes one large smoothie or two small ones.
Yoplait just released it’s new Source Greek Yogurt. It has twice the protein of regular Source yogurt, only 50 calories and no added sugar. Currently I’ve only been able to find strawberry or vanilla flavored in the stores where I shop in Alberta but they also have lemon. I’m hoping they come out with plain as well.
