Setting goals and deciding to change your life during the new year is great and sometimes it even works. Often, though, it works as long as it is easy and then the wheels fall off.
I know. “Where’d that wheel go? Mine fell off.”

Calgary has it’s own unique challenge in the winter because it is usually FREEZING. We’re really lucky this year that the weather has been mild, but often that isn’t the case. It can be hard to convince yourself to get up and get out the door when it is cold and snowy. Instead, we’ve set up our own home gym so that we can stay active without having to go out into the deep freeze unless we want to.
With home gyms, I like to find machines that work multiple parts of your body or can do multiple exercises. That way you don’t have to purchase as much equipment. Here are some great items I want to add to our home gym:
My first choice would be this Everlast® ‘EV796’ Deluxe Rower. Rowing is one of my favorite exercises because it uses your entire body.
The other machine on my wish list is a good treadmill. I love walking outside but when there’s a snow storm? No thanks!
Not in the market for an exercise machine? There are many great exercises that you can do with just your body and a few weights.
First you need a great yoga mat. Who needs a plain one when you can have a gorgeous Cherry Blossom mat instead?
Then add a few kettle bells in varying weights…
and a great work out outfit (because if you LOOK awesome, you FEEL Awesome) and you’re ready to go.
Since you are getting active and moving your body, don’t forget that you need to make sure you are fuelling your body properly too. Diet is SO important in your health. The hardest part of eating healthy for me is that if I don’t have a plan, I either eat crappy or eat out. Neither are that healthy. Here are a few of my favorite ways to keep on track.
Buy a slow cooker and use it early and often. One of the main reason most people get take out or go out for dinner is because they run out of time in the evenings to cook. I love my slow cooker because I can have a meal on the table in no time flat. I just load it up in the morning and then it is ready at dinner time. Easy peasy! I even have some great slow cooker recipes you should try.
Also buy a great blender. I love using my blender to make healthy smoothies full of spinach and blueberries and other great and healthy foods. It’s a great way to start every day off on the right foot.
