Inspired by the super popular butter board trend, a frosting board boasts a heaping amount of frosting in the center, surrounded by all sorts of sweet and salty goodies that go perfectly with frosting. This frosting board idea is styled for the holiday season, but you can make it at any time of the year.

What I love about frosting boards is that you can offer your guests a unique, no-bake dessert. They’re simple to put together, but make an impact in the center of your spread!

What Kind of Board to Use for a Holiday Frosting Board?

For any sort of frosting board, you will want to use a large, charcuterie, marble or wooden board so that you have as much space to work with as possible. Be sure that whatever board you decide to use, that it is food-grade and clean. Don’t have a large board? You can always put the frosting on a smaller board and surround it with little dishes of dippers.

What Kind of Frosting Should I Use to Make a Holiday Frosting Board?

American buttercream is what I used for my holiday board. It’s very simple to whip-up and consists of very few ingredients (and absolutely tastes amazing!). What Do I Need for my Frosting Board?

Here are the ingredients to gather before taking the leap to make your Holiday Frosting Board. Feel free to buy different (but similar) items that you can find in your area or that you prefer.

  • Green American buttercream (recipe below)
  • Pretzels
  • Mini Chips Ahoy cookies
  • Mini Ritz crackers
  • Chocolate Teddy Grahams
  • Holiday sprinkles
  • Piping Bag
  • Wilton 4B Frosting Tip

Here are the full, easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions on how to make this amazingly sweet Holiday Frosting Board!

How to Make American Buttercream

Add 1 can prepared vanilla frosting, 1 stick softened unsalted butter and 1 cup powdered (confectioners) sugar into a stand mixer. Mix on medium high until all ingredients are well-incorporated and form semi-stiff peaks.

Tint the Buttercream

Add 1-2 drops of green food coloring and mix until buttercream is completely tinted.

Start Frosting!

Scoop the green buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton frosting tip 4B attached. In the center of the board apply moderate pressure to release some icing. Stop squeezing the then pull off to create the starting shell.

On the next row add 2-3 more piped shells. Continue this process until you have the tree shape you’d like. As a note, always start in the center and work your way out on either side.

Complete the Frosting Board

Add cookies, pretzels and crackers all around the perimeter. Add sprinkles on top of the frosting tree.

If you are making your board ahead, make your frosting tree and top with sprinkles. Add your dippers right before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 can prepared vanilla frosting (you can use other flavours if you prefer)
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Green food coloring
  • 1.5 cup pretzels
  • 1.5 cup Mini Chips Ahoy
  • 1.5 cup Mini Ritz crackers
  • 1 cup Chocolate Teddy Grahams
  • Holiday sprinkles

Instructions

Notes

  • The frosting on this board is American Buttercream. Craft stores like Michaels and Walmart carry Wilton Buttercream which will work.
  • Buttercream is different from canned frosting. Canned frosting will need to be doctored to hold its shape,
