Being firmly in my 40s that I don’t really feel OLD yet but I also don’t feel all that young, either. In the past, I’ve let the passage of time do a number on my health and my emotions. After spending a few months amongst the snowbirds in Florida, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to feel younger and look it too.
First up, take care of your diet! Garbage in means garbage out. Unfortunately, this lesson has been learned the hard way. After months on the road eating out MUCH too often, I don’t have the pep in my step that I’m used to. Thankfully, that is somewhat of an easy problem to solve. Instead of focusing on what I can cut from my diet, I’m figuring out ways to add good things to it. What does that mean? I pick up a piece of fruit instead of a cookie and I make sure to eat a salad as part of almost every meal. When you focus on adding, you don’t develop the scarcity mindset that makes you CRAVE the things you should only eat in moderation. Oh, and don’t cut any one food out of your diet completely. Eat the cake! Life is too short to not enjoy everything….just in moderation.
Next, get out and get some exercise. Our bodies look and feel the best when we are working with muscle instead of just fat. How do we do that? Well, get out there and move! My favourite exercise is walking, I use my activity tracker to make sure I get the recommended 10,000 steps per day most days. Once I am home (only a few more weeks to go!), I will be starting back doing my Yoga with Adriene videos. I love her common sense approach to yoga. She reminds us all that yoga is a practice and everyone is welcome. Plus, many of her videos are free so you can fit yoga into your schedule instead of having to make set class time. So important for busy women trying to fit exercise into a busy schedule. (Plus, when you do yoga at home, your favourite fur baby can help.)
Take care of your skin! I’ve discovered that I need a quick and easy skin regimen to follow. I don’t have the ability to keep up with an involved routine, especially when I’m traveling. Lately, I’m using L’Oreal’s Revialift CicaCream. It’s L’Oreal’s 1st anti-wrinkle & skin barrier repair cream infused with Centella Asiatica. Centella Asiatica (also called Tiger Grass) fights the look of wrinkles and resists the signs of aging. Plus, the cream is fragrance-free, paraben-free and the 1st anti-aging cream to be certified by the Canadian Dermatology Association*.
When I use it, Cicacream goes on smooth, soaks in and leaves my skin feeling soft. I love that it is made specifically for people with sensitive skin who want to keep their skin looking younger while using a natural skin product. L’Oreal’s Revialift CicaCream works to repair skin moisture barrier today so it prevents future premature aging. It’s like exercise for your skin. It repairs the structure beneath your skin so the fine lines and wrinkles appear less and don’t start in the first place.
I love knowing that I am doing great things for my face and preventing future wrinkles. I’ve been lucky and I don’t have many fine lines yet. The few that I have are well on their way to GONE!
Have fun! Hanging out with a bunch of seniors for a few month while we’ve been in Florida has taught me a thing or two about how to feel younger. Basically, you are as young as you let yourself be. While many of our friends are in their 7os and 80s, they are out every day walking, playing shuffleboard or horse shoes, joining friends to play cards or heading out for dinner. Basically anything goes as long as it is FUN. Instead of sitting around figuring out their latest ache or pain, they focus on the positive. It has been so uplifting to see so many vibrant and happy seniors.
It has led me to let go of some of my hangups that I have put on myself. Instead of worrying about what others think, I just do what I like. That means buying the sparkly mouse ears when we went to Disney, painting my toenails the fun colors (or not depending on my mood), joining the seniors for banana split Tuesdays and embracing the fact that a walk around the park takes twice as long when you stop to chat with everyone….but it is also twice as much fun.
All in all, there are a lot of things you can do to make yourself look and feel younger but the best one is to take care of yourself and embrace your life. Do the things that make you and your skin healthier and have a bit of fun. It’s not very hard at all and you will be much look and feel younger and happier for it. I know I do!

I hear you. I am late 40s and I do most of these although my diet can always stand improvement. Exercise is super important to us here. I can’t keep up with my teens if I am not fit. I change up my face cream often depending on the season and I find I need to do that a lot due to dry skin that is also a bit sensitive. This looks like a good one. I will keep it in mind.

I have super dry skin as well!

LOVE your ideas! I often tell myself – now, is what I’m about to put in my mouth a good idea…. you’re no spring chicken anymore Deb…. but then I give in. Yikes. Working on that. I love your zest for your life. Mama – I feel you are looking and being young and light with every year that passes! So keep doing what you’re doing! I’m inspired by you! xx

Awww! And I am inspired by you, my friend! The food thing is the hardest for me. Being on the road has taken its toll. We are heading out the door to hit the grocery store for more fresh food options!

I need to keep up a skincare regime. I keep starting one and stopping… so forgetful!

You and me both! I need quick and easy!

Great tips! I just turned 40 in March. I think a lot of feeling younger is the attitude you take. I don’t feel 40!

If I could give my younger self any advice – SUNSCREEN! I have a LOT of sun damage on my face. and arms – hyperpigmentation. I’m almost 57 and am really struggling with aging. I have my dad and aunt’s hooded eyelids I’ll eventually need surgery for (before they droop so much I can’t see). I know people older than me who look younger. Aargh.

I am religious about sunscreen on my face. The rest… I am less good about. Just think…when you have the surgery it will be like an eye lift. Sucks that it is a have to do, though. Darn genetics.

Thanks for sharing these tips! I’m in my 40’s, and while I don’t feel it mentally, I DO feel it in my body from time to time.

I really like all the tips that you have here. I am also in my low 40s and I am trying to make my life healthier. The best thing I have done for myself is signed up for gym membership commit to it.

I think places like Disney can really bring out the youth in anyone! Good skin, and a white smile can shave off years.

I agree about dieting. I made a change in my eating habits almost year ago and it has given me more energy and feel better!

I love and use L’Oreal anti-aging products. Haven’t tried this one yet, though, so I’ll be picking up some the next time I’m out shopping.

I seriously need to take this advice. My diet isn’t great, but it’s not that bad. I guess I need to make changes there, first – and make it GREAT!

I think making sure you visit your doctor often is something that is so important too. I’ve felt off for a long time and I finally broke down and went to the doctor to find out there’s something wrong. Eating well, taking care of our skin and having fun are great ways to feel and look younger for sure though!
Merry Kuchle says
That is a REALLY great point!

I love all these tips – I’m starting to feel my age more and more these days lol. Taking care of your diet is crucial for me and really wonderful advice – whenever I’m not sticking with a healthy diet I crash.

I just started using L’Oreal’s Revialift CicaCream and so far I love it. My skin feels so soft and hydrated. I have been trying to eat healthier and get out more. I turn 45 this year and I am starting to feel my age.

These are some really great tips – especially diet and exercise! Those two go hand in hand.

Great advice! It’s so easy to think we’re “old.” Then we’re always sorry when we look back. It’s best to start thinking right, NOW!

Focusing on adding to what you eat is a great way to look at it. It definitely feels more positive. Healthy eating habits are so important.

I’m in my early 40s and need to take better care of myself. I need to add more activity to my life.
