It’s my Minecraft addicts birthday. I thought I would show you the awesome Minecraft Grass Block Cake I made for his party.
Today is Evan’s official birthday so the Minecraft posts are going to slow down and/or stop soon. Mostly because I don’t understand Minecraft enough to write about it. There seems to be lots of building, killing animals for food and fending off Creepers. If I actually listened to everything Evan told me about Minecraft, I would be an expert. Instead, I listen for 5 seconds and then my brain turns his voice in to the “Wah wah waaaaah wah” of Charlie Brown’s teacher.
However, I knew enough to know that Evan would LOVE a Minecraft cake. Mainly because Evan found a picture of the cake and said “Mama, you are making this cake for my birthday.” He told me this Wednesday night when his party was Friday. I was a little freaked but then I had a look and figured out I could do it. Mainly because it is square. No 3D characters for me. Cubes? Those I can do.
Oh and one caveat….even though I love baking from scratch, for a cake like this I used boxed cake mix and frosting from a tub. I hate to admit it but it still tasted great.
Minecraft Grass Block Cake Tutorial
Ingredients
2 chocolate cake mixes and the ingredients to make them in to cakes (usually eggs oil and water…check the back of the box)
green gel food coloring
1 200 gram bag of flaked sweetened coconut
11 oreo cookies with cream removed
3 graham cracker squares
1-2 tubs chocolate icing
1 tub vanilla icing
Step 1: The Cake
Prepare two chocolate cake mixes using the instructions on the back. Divide the batter between 3 greased and floured, square cake pans. Bake according to the package directions, turn out onto cooling racks and cool completely.
Step 2: Preparing the Decorations
- Use green food coloring to dye a 200g bag of flaked sweetened coconut (for the grass).
- Grind up the chocolate cookies from 11 Oreos (not the cream middle….eat that) and 3 graham cracker squares in food processor for cookie dirt.
- Dye a tub of vanilla icing green with green gel food coloring.
Step 3: Assembly
- Center one of the square cakes on a large platter.
- Place strips of parchment paper under the bottom of the cake to keep your platter clean while you decorate it.
- Cover the top with chocolate frosting.
- Add the second layer on top of the first.
- Cover the top with chocolate frosting.
- Add the third layer on top of the second.
- Cover the sides with chocolate frosting. If you are using only one tub of icing, be careful to cover all sides before you run out. Do not ice the top.
- Press the cookie dirt in to the chocolate frosting on the sides. An easy way to do this is to heap it in to a large serving spoon and press the top in to the frosting. Continue doing this until the sides are completely covered.
- Ice the top of the cake with green icing. Let a few glops drip over the side.
- Press green coconut into the green icing.
- Carefully remove parchment strips from under the cake.
- Serve & be a hero to your Minecraft crazy kids.

Hello,
Will there be any difference in texture / decoration / hold etc. if I had used ready made brownie mix instead of chocolate cake mix from betty cook for example ?
Merry120 says
I think the brownies would definitely be more dense and possibly more heavy. I think it would probably work though.

Just tried this cake and it was so easy and it looks fantastic. I just may get Grandma Gold Stars tomorrow at my grandson’s birthday party. Until yesterday I had no idea what Minecraft was. Thanks for the idea.
Merry Kuchle says
Yay! Thank you so much for letting me know you used the recipe. It is so easy for such a great looking cake. Your grandson is going to be ecstatic!

Would it work as well to do a thin layer of green icing on top, then follow up with the fur/grass icing tip instead of the coconut? I have a sibling who DESPISES coconut with a burning passion, but always comes to his niece and nephew’s parties. Thoughts?
Merry Kuchle says
Totally worth a try! I think it would look great.

Love this cake idea and am planning to try for my son’s 7th birthday this weekend. About how many do you think this will serve? Also, what size square pan did you use? Thanks so much!
Merry Kuchle says
It serves a bunch because it is so tall. And my pans are 8″X8″X2″.
Kelly says
Thank you!

One more question ?
Do you think I could make a day ahead or would the cookie crumbs get soggy. Wonder if I could freeze the decorated cake to keep them better? What are you thoughts?the party is at 10am so making the day before is ideal. Thanks so much!
Merry Kuchle says
I think making it the day before will be fine.
Kelly says
Thank you!

I am in the process of making this cake for my nephew’s Bday party. I used 3 9x9x2 square pans.
I didn’t read comments until they were already in the oven…hahaha… I used 3 boxes of mix.
They are in the oven right now…. so far so good.
Thank you for sharing this with us. I can’t wait to see the result!!!
Merry Kuchle says
Excited! Let me know how it goes!

What kind of chocolate frosting did you use? Everything that I’ve found at the store is way darker than what yours looks.
Merry Kuchle says
Just the standard milk chocolate canned frosting.
Miriam says
Hi what size pans are they?
Merry Kuchle says
9 inch square
Miriam says

What is the green color brand used? Is it kelly green or leaf green?
Merry Kuchle says
I honestly don’t remember. Any leaf-y color will do.
