Traveling full time has been fun. My trailer is a bit catchy so it starts many conversations with complete strangers. The first question is always “Is that trailer old or does it just look old?” The next question is “So where are you from?” and then “Oh…that’s cool. You aren’t old enough to be retired so how do you afford that?” Then when I say I am a blogger (and NO that does not completely fund this trip), people always ask “So what does a blogger DO anyway?”
And I think…well, that is a very good question!
I usually say that I write about our lives, travel and recipes. Oh and I also write about a few products that I really like and I think my readers will to. Sounds simple, right? Well, it can be or it can be really, really hard.
You see, blogging can often feel like you are yelling into the abyss. You take pictures, write recipes, pour your heart out and get nothing. Not even your mom reads it. Then other times you just throw something together and it gets tons of interaction. It is mind boggling.
Lately, with all the travel we are doing, the blog has been getting less attention that it usually gets. Moving stories about our travels off of our FB page and into the blog has been a slow and seemingly non-existent process. I love that so many people are following along with us over on FB, though. However, even that has its ups and downs. Facebook recently changed its algorithm so many people are no longer seeing my posts.
And then there are all the people who just don’t do Facebook or blogs or anything. I still love them even though I never see them on my page. Well…until they share a recipe very similar to one of mine but from a different blog….then I may say a bad word or two but I do still love them.
So the short answer for “What Does a Blogger DO Anyway?” is that a blogger pours out her (or his) heart onto the page and asks you to read it. We hope that you enjoy it and feel like it was worth your time. We live for regular readers, likes, comments and shares. We also LOVE to hear that you suggested our blog to someone that you thought would like it. Is it all about popularity or feeling loved? Kinda. But only in the sense that I do this for my business and traffic equals money (whether in ad revenue or getting sponsored posts). Even without all that, though, knowing that something you write is worthy of someone’s time and energy is an amazing feeling. It is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
So next time you figure out your friend is a blogger, tell them you read their blog (if you do), share their latest post on your favourite social media platform and leave them a comment. You will make their day. I promise!
Oh and if you happen to be from a PR firm or company that works with bloggers, yes I am for hire and I would love to work with you (if you fit with the MerryAboutTown brand of course).
Here are some of my most popular posts (or ones I love the most) that I bet your friends would like:
