Presents are awesome – no one is going to argue with that. But birthdays are also a great time to teach your kids about the importance of giving.
An easy (and potentially free) way to do this is through random acts of kindness. For instance, you could shovel someone’s walk or bake cookies for your local police station. For a birthday, connect it to your child’s age: an 8-year-old would commit 8 random acts of kindness.
We went grocery shopping and bought a bouquet of flowers, which we split up and handed out to employees and shoppers. Everyone was so happy. One mom exclaimed, “You just made my day!”
My personal inspiration for bringing my daughter out was Danielle Stewart and her family. Danielle’s husband, Warren, died suddenly last year. For his 50th birthday this year, she is encouraging people to engage in 50 random acts of kindness in his honour.
