Would you eat a whale? How about a zombie? No? You may change your mind once you see the amazing cakes people are making for the annual Threadcakes competition.
Past winners have included: a floating steampunk airship; a colourful coral reef; a zombie hunter; and a robot demolishing a flaming cottage.

Threadcakes is an online cake contest with a twist: all of the cakes are based on the quirky designs from Threadless, a community-sourced t-shirt site. Bakers can create either traditional “2D” cakes or sculptural “3D” cakes.
I joined the Threadcakes team this year as the social media manager. I cannot bake. I am terrrrrrrible at it. The closest I’ve come is these easy no-bake cake pops. BUT I do love to eat cake, and I love to look at awesome cakes. It’s like being involved in a Food Network competition (but I don’t have to leave my couch)!
The Threadcakes team is not officially associated with Threadless. We’re just big fans of cake! Chris Cardinal, the founder of the contest, says “I used to run a fan blog where I wrote about Threadless designs. I amassed a bunch of gift cards, and figured a cake competition would be a fun way to give them away.”
The internet agreed. Threadcakes receives over 100 entries each year from both professional and amateur bakers, and the entries are viewed over half a million times.
