When I Grow Up, I Want to Be…..

When I Grow Up, I Want to Be…..

With an 8 year old around, we talk a lot about what people can “be” when they grow up. Evan has wanted to be everything from a race car driver to a chef to a boomerang carver. I never tell him that he can’t do his dream job of the moment, just that he has lots of time to make that decision.

Talking about it got me thinking, though. What did I want to be when I grew up?

I can remember in third grade that I wanted to be an astronaut (obviously I didn’t realize that having a BIG problem with motion sickness did not make this a real option). We studied Christa McAuliffe in school and I wanted to be just like her….until the Challenger explosion. Then I decided that was a bit to dangerous for me.

Fast forward to my high school years when I really wanted to be a doctor. After watching Medicine Man, I decided I didn’t just want to be a doctor. Nope, I wanted to be an MD and a PhD. Did I not realize that would take eleventy billion years in university? I started school in Chemical Engineering because it is one of the most highly accepted undergrad degrees for medical schools. Alas, once I hit organic chemistry, I knew med school was probably not for me. Instead, I stayed with Chemical Engineering and graduated with my bachelors degree.

Funnily enough, you would think that having a degree would make what you are going to “be” when you grow up an easy answer. Nope. I went off to work at a chemical plant with a uniform, my name on a patch and safety shoes. I looked around and thought “What have I done? This is NOT for me!”

After 5 years in university, that is not an easy thing to realize or admit. I looked around and decided to see what I could do with an engineering degree that was only engineering-esque. I ended up in process automation sales in Austin, TX. I love, love, loved it. Then I fell in love and moved to Calgary. I worked a few more years in inside and outside sales. During that time I fell in love with blogging and social media.

As you know, I quit my engineering sales job 3 years ago and now I work in social media and blogging. I love it and it allows me to be there for Evan when he needs me.

But you know what? At 39 3/4 years old, I STILL don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I have no idea.

What I do know is that if I could do anything I want, I would travel full time with Evan and Dewey. I grew up in a tiny town and all I wanted to ever do was to GO and SEE all the things I read about in books or saw in movies.

I guess that is what I always wanted to be…and I am, though not as much as I would like….a traveller.

What did you/do you want to be when you grow up?

I wanted to be an astronaut too, but mostly because I was born the same year as the moon landing. Then I wanted to be a doctor. So basically you need to get out of my brain now, mmmkay? Having said that, I'm so glad I wound up being a teacher. I love it so much!

Hm, seem like we had similar thoughts. I wanted to be an astronaut and was going to go into engineering and then realised, nope, not smart enough for that. then thought teacher. then discovered museums and well the rest is history. but deep down I would love to be a travel journalist. but that is just not in the cards. well, the pocket book more than the cards. sucks that some dreams are financially dependent.

I think everyone our age wanted to be an astronaut. :)
