Writing about places I visit when I travel is great fun but occasionally I forget to write about the amazing places in my own city. One that is near and dear to my heart is the Calgary Zoo. Since we live in Ramsay it is just around the corner from us. Before Evan started to school, we visited all the time. Now that he spends most days at school, we visit less often but we try to go for a full day to see all his favorite animals.
Calgary is a great city to live in and a great city to visit. I have had the joy of hosting many friends and family members here since I moved to Calgary 9 years ago. One reason I suggest the Calgary Zoo for a visit is that it does a great job introducing visitors to the wildlife in the Canadian Rockies. Seeing a bear in the wild is amazing but it rarely happens (much to the happiness of hikers and the bears) but at the zoo you can see them in the Canadian Wilds section of the zoo. You might even catch a glimpse of their new white black bear (seen below).
Another of Evan’s favorite places to visit at the Calgary Zoo is the Enmax Conservatory butterfly exhibit. It is a warm respite if you visit during cooler weather and the gardens are beautiful. When in season, the butterflies flit about landing on the beautiful plants and water features. If you are very, very still, on may even land on you! Bring along a sketch book to capture your favorite animals throughout the zoo.
No visit to the zoo would be complete without a visit to see the hippos Lobi and Sparky!
The Calgary Zoo is a great destination year round. Make sure to check out the penguins, the new Komodo dragons and much more. You can either buy lunch at the zoo or pack your own picnic. Wear comfortable shoes because the zoo is quite large. Families with small children will appreciate a stroller or a wagon.
