Easy Blanket Crochet Pattern
Crochet is a fun and relaxing hobby. As part of bettering my life after 40, I am getting back into hobbies that I've enjoyed in the past but let fall by the wayside. This easy blanket crochet pattern was the perfect first project to get me back into the swing of things.
Since it's been a few years since I've crocheted routinely, I wanted to start with a project that I could easily complete without getting frustrated (there is nothing worse than trying to get back into something you enjoy and picking a project that leaves you wanting to throw it in the garbage).
I also decided I wanted to try my hand at making a blanket with the Bernat Blanket Yarn. It's thick chenille yarn that adds bulk and warmth without the weight. The only downside is they have a very limited colour pallet for their traditional (non-baby) blanket yarn.

When I was looking for a pattern to use, I came across this great video for making a baby blanket with Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn. She does a great job of going through the instructions for beginners and she wrote out the full instructions here too.
Easy Blanket Crochet Pattern
Use these basic instructions except:
Make your begging row chain as wide as you want your blanket but make sure the width is a multiple of 6.
Use a P/11.5 hook.
Keep going until it is long enough. Read about the blankets I made below.
On my first try, I got a little crazy, though, and ended up making it HUGE. It is perfect for snuggling on the couch because there's room to share with my little guy and my dog. I used 6 or 7 balls of yarn for this blanket.
Since my first try turned out so well, I decided to try again at a more reasonable size. This one is 60 chains wide I stopped when it was as long as I liked. I think I used 3 balls (I promise to start writing that part down).
I love this pattern because after you get done your starting chain, you are done counting. As you can see by my lack of knowledge of how many yarn balls I used, I am not a fan of counting.
Beginners can practice their stitches without the frustration of having to make sure they have a specific number of stitches per row and longtime crocheters can make a fun and quick blanket that is perfect for a gift.

I used the same size hook as the pattern. I'm not sure how many I did for the chain. I will count for you.
