Evan's Favorite Green Smoothie

Evan's Favorite Green Smoothie

My health and exercise routine has taken a back seat for the last six months. I wish I could give you a solid excuse for that but then I would be lying. It just hasn't been a focus. The one thing that I have done pretty consistently, though, is to add green smoothies to my diet. You see, no matter how hard I try, I just don't seem to get enough servings of vegetables on to my plate. Green smoothies are my favorite way to get all that green leafy goodness in to my body with as little effort as possible. Wait....before you starting thinking "ICK...green smoothies....gross!" let me assure you that they are so delicious that even Evan slurps them down with joy.

One thing I've determined in all my smoothie testing, though, is that you MUST add protein in to the mix or you are hungry again in no time flat. My favorite way to get that protein staying power? Greek yogurt! Yep, a healthy sized spoon full of Greek yogurt brings it all together without making your smoothie overly dairy heavy and it will keep you full right up until lunch time.

Evan's Favorite Green Smoothie

3 cups organic baby spinach

½ of a large frozen banana

~½ cup frozen blueberries

heaping serving spoon of Greek Yogurt

~½ cup juice (we like mango or orange)

water as needed for blendability

Optional - 1 tablespoon flax seeds

Add ingredients in you blender. Make sure to put the spinach in first or it doesn't blend very well. Serve and enjoy. This makes one large smoothie or two small ones.

Yoplait just released it's new Source Greek Yogurt. It has twice the protein of regular Source yogurt, only 50 calories and no added sugar. Currently I've only been able to find strawberry or vanilla flavored in the stores where I shop in Alberta but they also have lemon. I'm hoping they come out with plain as well.

  1. I could take or leave the yogurt (I'm a plain gal), but I am in for the Lulu GC! 😉

  2. The yogurt sounds delicious! The GC wouldn't be too bad either 🙂

I'm going to have to try that smoothie recipe, it sounds awesome!

  3. I'm slowly working on getting back to the good habits now that my son is 9 months old, I try to add a healthy approach to my day by only snacking on fruit or veggies after supper!

  4. I can't have dairy (and whey) due to a recently discovered sensitivity so I'm learning how to incorporate other ingredients into my diet. For smoothies, that means soy or coconut milk yogurt/milk instead, and soy or vegan protein powders!

My boyfriend can (and will) use the yogurt prize, though 😉 I'll take lulu!

    1. Yes, I've tried kale. Superstore was out of spinach so I bought kale. It has a much stronger taste than spinach so I found I had to increase the banana or it tasted too kale-y for me. More banana and it tasted fine.

  5. That sounds great and a lot like the one I make (except for me it's because lately I'm having a hard time getting my fruit servings in). I use vanilla yogurt, but I'll have to try Greek. That's a great idea to make it more filling. (And thanks for the tip about putting the spinach in first.)

  6. As a busy mom, its tough for me to get my fruits and vegetables in every day. I usually look to yogurt for this. I know that sucks, and I am trying to get better, but Yoplait yogurt is my favorite!

  7. I like to make smoothies, and use tons of veggies, kale, spinach, etc. Its the easiest way and great for leftovers too!

  8. Favourite way to up the nutrition in my diet? Besides red wine? Bok choy and bacon. (Bonus: it's an aphrodisiac too, IMHO).

  9. I make fresh juice to try and sneak in those extra nutrients. I should try using it in a smoothie with yogurt. Yum!

    1. I'm not sure but I don't see why not. I prefer smoothies to juice just because you keep all the fiber in there.

  10. We buy a ton of fruit on sale and never let it go bad - when it's too ripe we freeze it cut up for nutritious smoothies!

  11. To stay healthy we try to eat as much Farm raised and local meat as we can. I also add flax and chia seeds to EVERYTHING!

  12. Green smoothies are pretty awesome! I love that the spinach can be snuck in to the ones for the kids and they don't notice. Another way to make them more filling is to add some avocado. It changes the texture a little but still yummy and good fats with lots of fibre!
