Evan's Favorite Green Smoothie
My health and exercise routine has taken a back seat for the last six months. I wish I could give you a solid excuse for that but then I would be lying. It just hasn't been a focus. The one thing that I have done pretty consistently, though, is to add green smoothies to my diet. You see, no matter how hard I try, I just don't seem to get enough servings of vegetables on to my plate. Green smoothies are my favorite way to get all that green leafy goodness in to my body with as little effort as possible. Wait....before you starting thinking "ICK...green smoothies....gross!" let me assure you that they are so delicious that even Evan slurps them down with joy.
One thing I've determined in all my smoothie testing, though, is that you MUST add protein in to the mix or you are hungry again in no time flat. My favorite way to get that protein staying power? Greek yogurt! Yep, a healthy sized spoon full of Greek yogurt brings it all together without making your smoothie overly dairy heavy and it will keep you full right up until lunch time.
Evan's Favorite Green Smoothie
3 cups organic baby spinach
½ of a large frozen banana
~½ cup frozen blueberries
heaping serving spoon of Greek Yogurt
~½ cup juice (we like mango or orange)
water as needed for blendability
Optional - 1 tablespoon flax seeds
Add ingredients in you blender. Make sure to put the spinach in first or it doesn't blend very well. Serve and enjoy. This makes one large smoothie or two small ones.
Yoplait just released it's new Source Greek Yogurt. It has twice the protein of regular Source yogurt, only 50 calories and no added sugar. Currently I've only been able to find strawberry or vanilla flavored in the stores where I shop in Alberta but they also have lemon. I'm hoping they come out with plain as well.

Greek yogurt has become my go to meal since having kids, and lulu well they've become my good enough to leave the house in pants! This contest was made for me (or anyone else raising a mini terrorist under 2).
I am trying to eat whole grains instead of white bread,,and eat more fruits and veggies!
Adding Greek yogurt to homemade dips, but I will trying the smoothie!
We are on a smoothie kick here too! If we're out of ground flax seeds, I like to add a tablespoon or so of chia seeds to them for the added nutrition boost.
Make dips to go with veggies
Good idea with the yogurt! I cheat more fruit and veggies into my diet with smoothies, but I hadn't thought of that. I also try to use whole grain flour when I'm baking, and I add ground flax seed, which makes everything healthy! Right?
I make a lot of smoothies too for nutrition.
My favourite way is to add flax! I am crazy about flax; tastes great and it's SO good for you!
I add granola to my greek yogurt and use brown rice and bread!
I'm planning on having a garden this summer so I can eat a lot more fresh vegetables and a lot less food from a can or box.
I have good intensions for smoothies but hate washing the blender. I'm not sure why as it just comes apart and goes in the dishwasher.
I used to hate washing my blender too - now I use a magic bullet and it feels like less cleaning since I drink from the cup I blend in 🙂
Lately, I've been all abut the Greek yogurt with a combination of chia, flax and hemp hearts ( like holy Crap cereal) for breakfast. Fills you up till lunch and is super healthy too.
Leaving or making healthier food options more accessible in the fridge and on the counter so I am more inclined to pick the easier, healthier option over the harder-to-reach, not-so-healthy option.
I also try to surround myself and family with better and healthier options. Having cut up veggie snacks ready to go is a good trick.
I like having a smoothie to start, that way i know i am getting my fruit or vegetable servings.
lots of fruit at home
Lots of lentil soups and salads.
I love green smoothies too - I use vanilla yogurt in mine, plus bananas, spinach, and peanut butter. Lots of protein and so yummy!
I am trying to have a glass of milk in the morning instead of tea to "healthify" my diet. I find it fills me up till lunch vs a morning tea and I am getting in more calcium in too.
I like to reduce sugar and add multigrain flour when baking
