Rocking the Staycation in Radium, BC!

With tough economic times in the Calgary oil sector, more and more people are looking to take a staycation instead of a vacation. Luckily, we are surrounded by natural beauty that people travel from all over the world to visit. A few weeks ago, a group of friends and I drove the short 3 1/2 hours from Calgary to Radium for a girls’ weekend. It was an amazing weekend and left me wondering why we don’t go to Radium more often. I thought I would share a bit of what made me love it so much.

Big Horn Meadows Resort

Where to Stay – Bighorn Meadows Resort

We rented condos at Bighorn Meadows Resort. Our group had a few two and three bedroom condos. Each were tastefully outfitted with fully outfitted kitchens (pots, pans, coffee makers and…most importantly…corkscrews), comfy bedrooms, huge bathrooms, patios with bbqs, free wifi and more. While it was perfect for our merry band of women, I couldn’t help but notice that it was perfectly laid out for our larger family. We are rarely able to find places that will fit us all (3 kids and 2 adults) in comfort but these condos are HUGE.

Cozy Cottage Feel

The living rooms were beautifully decorated and each had an electric fireplace for cozy nights in.

Fully outfitted kitchen

Our kitchen was perfect for our group and it had everything we needed. I have stayed at so many places that don’t set up their kitchens properly. That was NOT the case at Bighorn Meadows. Coffee supplies were included as well (yay coffee!).

Comfy Rooms

My favorite part….a GIANT king size bed that I didn’t have to share with anyone. In the three bedroom condos, two of the rooms have kings and one has a queen. The living room also has a pull-out sofa. Plenty of room for everyone!

Bighorn Meadows is perfect for a visit in summer or winter since it is located along the 9th hole of the Springs Golf Course in Radium Hot Springs and within 20 minutes of 12 other golf courses. Winter fanatics will enjoy our close proximity to 6 incredible ski hills including Panorama, Fairmont Hot Springs, Kimberley, Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Kicking Horse. Onsite amenities include an onsite hot tub, seasonal outdoor heated pool, playground, and landscaped pathways.

Cross Country Skiing

And you don’t even have to leave to have great winter fun! The golf course is the perfect place for cross country skiing or snowshoeing. That’s my friends Samantha (PeekThruOurWindow) and Kyla (Mommy’sWeird) getting their cross country skiing on in the picture above.

Snowshoeing

I haven’t learned how to cross country ski yet so my friend Jo-Anna (APrettyLife) and I went for a snowshoe instead. It was so beautiful and peaceful. I love that you can explore right outside the door of your condo. No driving necessary!

What To Do:

Fun in Invermere

Definitely plan to visit the town of Invermere while you are visiting Radium. It has a cute little downtown district full of distinctive shops. The Candyland candy shop, Bird’s Eye Boutique Secondhand Clothing Store and antique store are all worth a visit. Also make sure to stop by Kicking Horse Coffee and Arrowhead Brewing Company.

Invermere on the Lake

Take a walk to overlook the lake and see all the fishing shacks. You can also ski and skate on the lake if you wish.

Lunch at the Blue Dog Cafe

After you have walked through town, make sure to stop in at the Blue Dog Cafe for delicious whole food options that will leave your carnivores, omnivores and vegetarians cheering with delight. I ate there twice on our visit and I can’t wait to go back. The falafel pita is TO DIE FOR.

Also make sure you take the time to visit the Radium Hot Springs. The warm mineral pools soak your tire muscles while your hair freezes. Sounds weird but it is amazing. I considered skipping the springs but I was oh so glad that I went!

Basically, Radium has everything you could ask for…great places to visit, a great place to stay and so much more like….

Mountain Sheep

Wildlife….

Gorgeous place, Merry. You ladies seemed to have blast. Wish I lived closer, or maybe I just need to go across Canada and relax in one of those king size beds!
